Muzyczny ślad 2026

Weinberg’s 24 Preludes: the first complete recording by a Polish performer

In 2026 Fundacja Via Sonoria is carrying out a project co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage under the ‘Muzyczny ślad 2026’ (Musical Trace) programme, run by the National Institute of Music and Dance.

The project covers the preparation, recording and release of an album with the first complete recording by a Polish performer of the 24 Preludes for solo cello by Mieczysław Weinberg – a work of exceptional artistic value that is still rarely heard in concert or on record.

The project is directed by, and carried out together with, the outstanding Polish artist Zuzanna Sosnowska – cellist, soloist, chamber musician and teacher, prizewinner at prestigious international competitions, who performs on three continents.

The project aims to:

  • promote the music of Mieczysław Weinberg – one of the most important twentieth-century composers connected with Polish culture,
  • record and share the cycle of 24 Preludes in an interpretation by a Polish artist,
  • give the Polish recording market a lasting, high-quality document of twentieth-century cello repertoire,
  • bring Polish music to wider audiences at home and abroad.

The album programme will also include Sofia Gubaidulina’s 10 Preludes, creating a coherent artistic concept built around the prelude as an autonomous, personal compositional gesture.

Significance

The project is an important step towards systematically documenting and promoting Poland’s twentieth-century musical heritage.

The first complete recording of Mieczysław Weinberg’s 24 Preludes by a Polish performer, Zuzanna Sosnowska, may well become an important point of reference for artists, educators and musicologists – in Poland and beyond.
